…99, 100 – The Four Vs of Big Data are coming, are you ready or not?

Get your Enterprise Big Data system V ready.

You don’t need predictive analytics to be quite certain that over the next 5 years the workload and expectations on every enterprise information management and analytics system will be many times what it is today.

All of us with a serious interest in data and analytics are very aware of IBM’s Four Vs of big data. Variety, volume, velocity and veracity are high on the agenda of directors and senior management across all business functions of large organisations, or at least should be. From CIOs to CMOs, to Boards and shareholders, everyone has a stake in big data to achieve key business objectives.

IBM predict that worldwide:

40 zettabytes (43 trillion gigabytes) of data will be created by 2020, an increase of 300 times from 2005
It’s a sure bet that a large proportion of this data will be stored on the big data servers or in the ‘clouds’ of enterprise organisations. This IBM infographic says it all.

IBM is at the forefront of enterprise class big data technology and toolsets

As one might expect IBM is leading the way in creating and updating its software products to deal with the opportunities and challenges of the 4 Vs. IBM’s InfoSphere product set gives access to a suite of powerful IBM big data technology and toolsets that will reliably process data now and are scaleable for the future.

Evaluating and benchmarking IBM technologies against your current capabilities is a useful way to work out if you are V ready or not. If you haven’t got similar solutions in place then you may need to act. IBM’s InfoSphere solutions are specifically designed for enterprise big data.

Variety

IBM InfoSphere Datastage is an advanced data integration solution designed to extract, transform and load structured and unstructured data from and to multiple sources and targets. Quickly moving data from application to application and system to system and performing complex jobs to reach a state where conclusions and insights support effective decision making. Change Data Capture functionality keeps targets updated efficiently as data changes.  As an alternative approach IBM Federation Server can be used to consolidate multiple data sources on the fly to make it appear as a single source.

Volume

InfoSphere Information Server is a market-leading data integration platform which includes a family of products that enable you to understand, cleanse, monitor, transform, and deliver data, as well as to collaborate to bridge the gap between business and IT.  Built on a MPP (massively parallel processing) engine and with native connectivity to the most powerful of database (DB2 Blu) and data warehouse (Netezza) technologies, it can cope with even the biggest of data volumes.

Velocity

Infosphere Data Replication is a tool that copies ever changing data fast and gets it where it needs to go, without having to ask queries which can slow down business critical transaction systems.

Veracity

Of course, volume, velocity and variety are all well and good but even the biggest of big data will be useless if the data itself is not reliable. This requires data governance initiatives, technologies and processes that monitor data quality, cleanse data and define business terms. Of course IBM have this covered.

IBM Premier Business Partner

InfoSphere Business Information Exchange includes a business glossary that helps to define terms and policies necessary for governance. InfoSphere Information Server for Data Quality is used to cleanse data and monitor quality.

If you have all the above capabilities already then you are probably ready for the opportunities the four V’s present. If not then a conversation with EBI about how IBM InfoSphere could work for you is likely to be worthwhile. EBI are a Premier IBM Business Partner.
